Blue Moon Space Operations Files Provisional Patent for Space Debris Capture Technology
August 15, 2025 – California — Blue Moon Space Operations LLC (BMSO) has officially filed Provisional Patent No. 63/834,412 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its cooperating, multi-tool, robotic capture vehicle, a novel technology designed to address the growing challenge of space debris in Earth orbit.
This milestone marks a major step forward in BMSO’s mission to make Earth orbit cleaner, safer, and more sustainable. The proprietary system enables autonomous cooperation between robotic units equipped with a combination of grappling devices, netting systems, bumpers, and magnetic tools to safely collect and redirect orbital debris.
“Our technology was built from the ground up to function as a scalable, modular solution to space junk,” said Sandy Therrien, Founder and CEO. “This patent protects the innovations that allow multiple robotic units to work together in real time, which is something that doesn’t yet exist in operational spaceflight.”
The company plans to continue development through a series of feasibility studies, rapid prototyping, and simulations, followed by in-orbit testing. The filed patent covers the core architecture of the capture and long range propulsion system, which will be complemented by a future filing for lunar transport and recycling systems.
Blue Moon Space Operations is committed to ethical, sustainable space operations with a long-term vision of orbital debris removal, in-space recycling, and supplying materials for lunar in-situ construction and operations.
April 18, 2025 – California — Blue Moon Space Operations LLC (BMSO) is proud to announce that it has filed for trademark protection with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the phrase:
Standard Character Mark
This trademark represents not just a clever play on words, but a core principle of the company’s mission to clean and reclaim Earth orbit through sustainable, cooperative, robotic technology. The mark has been filed in standard character format, meaning it is protected regardless of font style, size, or color.
“We wanted a phrase that captures both the urgency and the optimism behind what we’re building,” said Sandy Therrien, Founder and CEO. “'Don’t waste space' speaks to the environmental mindset we bring to orbit. We should operate in space responsibly and with a sustainable end game in mind."
The trademark filing reflects BMSO’s commitment to developing technologies that prevent orbital congestion, remove existing debris, and eventually deliver repurposed materials to support in-situ lunar operations and long-term space infrastructure.
The phrase will appear in outreach materials, awareness campaigns, and educational partnerships aimed at promoting responsible orbital stewardship.
